New Design!#

Okay so the last time I redesigned this site wasn't that long ago yet but I guess all the graphics and fancy XP-like stuff was a little over the top... If you can actually see your page being rendered before your eyes then there's either something wrong with your site or the server is really slow. In my case I'd assume it was a little bit of both actually ;-)

So anyway: I decided to create a new design, much simpler and easier on the eyes this time. Or at least, so I hope. So please tell me what you think!

(If you're reading this through an aggregator of some kind: don't. Just for once, don't. Open that browser thingy once again if you haven't uninstalled it yet and actually surf to my blog. It'll bring back that special ninetees feeling!)

Much better! But I don't like horizontal scrolling, I'm on 1024*768, that should be enough, or maybe there is something wrong with the html, because your posts appear more to the right than your header

Yes I've noticed that as well, something's going wrong with the CSS-based layout (no tables here) of the page in Mozilla. I finally got it to work in IE but apparently I'm still doing something wrong... Anyway, it's on my list; I hope to fix it soon!

Indeed, these looks are much better. It even looks professional ;-)

I see many people reworking their blog using CSS based layouts (instead of the table layout). Unfortunately, it is harder to get it right on all browsers, or that's my experience...

There are a couple of good resources out there, I might blog about it in the near future ;-)

Thanks for the positive comments, I'm actually pretty pleased about it myself :-)

And any help/resources about the CSS based layout would be appreciated. Blog blog blog! :-)

A'ight, I think I fixed it! The layout is looking good in IE6 and in Mozilla Firebird now. Let me know if it's not working out for you - or even better: tell me what to change so it does work :-)

Hey, now it looks ok in Firefox. The boxes are a little bit different (no rounded corners), but that's just a minor issue. Rendering is also very fast ;-)

Yes, I've noticed that as well... It's a pity that only IE draws the rounded corners, but using the fieldset/legend combination (which I did) is much easier and faster than using a table with images as corners so it'll have to do I'm afraid...

The only remaining issue is that with the new CSS based column layout (v2.0, that is), the menu bar on the left can shift to the bottom if the content on the right grows too large (e.g. if your screen is pretty small or big content like a wide picture is put in the main content area). All tips welcome again :-)

Rounded corners? I don't see any rounded corners in IE...

Another remark: in Firefox your footer in the fieldset (date, comments, trackback etc...) has a nice space below it. In IE it almost 'sticks' to the bottom line of your fieldset.

Btw, fieldsets rule! I think they are one the most underappreciated html tags :)

Oy? No rounded corners in IE?! That's the default look for fieldsets! Did you hack IE or something because the fieldset footer isn't 'sticking' to the bottom here either. At least, it looks the same in IE6.0 as in Firefox RC1.0.

I'm still puzzled by the whole bottom-shifting-menubar though, I really don't like that. CSS guru's: I'd call that a challenge ;-)

But I agree on the fieldsets tag: maybe we should start a World Fieldset Preservation Fund or something. We could hand out little flyers with nothing but fieldsets on them on college campuses. Wicked!

Hey Nico: have a close look, there are rounded corners, but they are very small.

Jelle: -moz-border-radius: 10px; /* mozilla only */ --> this should solve the rounded border problem in Mozilla based browsers (apply to a div). I don't know whether you can use it together with the other style elements?

Thanks Doggi, that Mozilla-specific CSS tag seems to be working, I'll add that to my stylesheet later on.

Yeah, the layout is much better than before. I've got only one remark, the titles of the blogitems (dates) are to dark and not good readable. But generally like Doggi said: It even looks professional ;-)
Keep up the good work!

Steven, I'm not sure I'm following you on the titles of the blogitems being too dark... Do you mean the titles of the comments? That would mean the title boxes in the menu bar are too dark as well. But they look fine to me, maybe you have to increase the backlight on your portable ;-) Or you're using the same funky IE build that Nico seems to be running on :-)

This is my personal website, not my boss', not my mother's, and certainly not the pope's. My personal opinions may be irrelevant, inaccurate, boring or even plain wrong, I'm sorry if that makes you feel uncomfortable. But then again, you don't have to read them, I just hope you'll find something interesting here now and then. I'll certainly do my best. But if you don't like it, go read the pope's blog. I'm sure it's fascinating.
